Not receiving Gmail app notifications on an Android device?

This is one of the staple issues reported in the Gmail Help Community and a blog article on it, with the relevant screenshots, should offer the necessary information for the affected users to not just troubleshoot their issue, but in most cases, resolve it.

Note: The screenshots are from a device that offers a near-stock Android UI. Details may appear different on devices due to Android OS version and vendor customization.

This will be a three-part troubleshooting process. The parts are mentioned below.
  1. Under Notifications within the Android Settings app
  2. Within the Notifications part of the General section under Settings for the Gmail Android app
  3. Under Notifications for that particular account within the Gmail app

Under Notifications within the Android Settings app.
  • Tap on the Settings app on your device.
  • Locate and tap on the Notifications option.
  • Under Manage tap on App Notifications.
  • Check to confirm if notification for Gmail is enabled.

Our Part 1 is complete. We now move ahead to Part 2.

Within the Notifications part of the General section under Settings for the Gmail Android app.
  • Tap to open the Gmail Android app.
  • Tap on the 3-bar (Menu) icon at the top left.
  • Scroll down and tap on the Settings option to see the different options.
  • We tap on the General settings option and thereafter, tap on Manage notifications.
  • Ensure the Gmail notifications option is enabled.

We have now completed two out of our three-part process.

Under Notifications for that particular account within the Gmail app.
  • Tap to open the Gmail Android app.
  • Tap on the 3-bar (Menu) icon at the top left.
  • Scroll down and tap on the Settings option.
  • Tap on the email address you want to set notifications for.
  • It will open up these options:
  • First, we ensure the Email notifications are set to All (and not set to High Priority Only). High Priority is not about emails marked as important. These notifications leverage Gmail’s machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities to identify messages you may want to read first. So, if the algorithm doesn't decide an email to be such, you won't receive a notification of that email.
  • Tapping on Inbox notifications, you’ll see the options as displayed in the screenshot below. Ensure the options are checked as shown.
  • We then tap on Manage labels. It shows all system and user-created labels and the number of days they are set to sync.
  • I have used Primary as an example. We tap on each label we wish to receive notifications for and ensure the options shown under Notifications are checked. Remember, we need to do this for each label we want to receive notification for.
  • We thereafter tap on Notification sounds. There we ensure we have a sound set for Email notification.

We have now completed our three-part troubleshooting process. The above steps should sort out email notification issues in the Gmail Android app. If the issue persists, you need to check if any DND or optimization setting - such as a battery optimization option - are muting your email notifications.

Revisiting Canned Responses (Templates) in Gmail

I wrote my first blog on Canned Responses here - Exploring the Advanced Tab in Gmail Settings: About Canned Responses , noting "Believe it or not, there is no article on Canned Responses in the Gmail Help Centre. Probably because it has always been a lab feature in the past and now included under the Advanced tab under Gmail settings in the new Gmail. So, today we take a look at this very popular feature in Gmail and the different ways we can use it.". That has remained the case, so with a change of UI, there is a need to rewrite the tutorial on how we can perform the following functions for a Canned Response or as they are now known, Templates . Create a Template Insert a Template Edit or Overwrite a Template Delete a Template Thankfully, the prerequisites haven't changed. To start using Templates in Gmail, it needs to be enabled from the Advanced tab under Gmail settings. As always, be sure to click on the Save Changes button on the bottom of the page. ...
